Garw Valley Animation Project

Sixty pupils from schools in the Garw Valley have created animations for a heritage resource in their commmunity.  Thirty year six pupils from Betws Primary School and thirty from Ffaldau Primary School in the Garw Valley, Maesteg took part in a week long animation project to create two animated DVDs.

The DVD’s will form part of an exhibition in an pending educational facility in the community in Betws, near Bridgend, which will provide a heritage resource for the Garw communities, schools and colleges as well as providing in depth heritage interpretation about the area.

Ffaldau Primary produced an animated cartoon of an old tale from Glamorgan based at a farmhouse, now ruined, close to Bryn-y-Wrach.  The tale is a short love story called The Devil of Bryn-y-Wrach, and is taken from a collection of short stories by Wendy Hughes.   Betws Primary School created a cartoon based on excerpts from Ieuan ap Madog’s The Voyage of the Wandering Knight.

The formal screening of both animations was held at the ATRiuM in Cardiff on the 29th June.  More than 100 people were in attendance as pupils received certificates in recognition of their hard work and effort.  Trish Schofield, head of Ffaldau Primary said “This has been a fantastic opportunity to broaden the children experience and raise their aspirations generally.  They have loved every minute of the project and learnt a lot of basic skills as well as animation.”
Kathryn Maddy, First Campus Manager said “The pupil's work is of a very high standard and will make a real impact when it goes on display.  Its been fun for the pupils to learn more about their community heritage, and now they can pass that knowledge on through these animations. ”
