The Science of Art or the Art of Science

Mid and West Wales Community Event

The West and Mid Wales Widening Access Partnership in conjunction with Tregaron and Uplands Communities First region recently held a “The Science of Art or the Art of Science” session at Pontryhfendigaid.  This event combined examining the structure of wool fibres using electron microscope pictures to explain the science behind the process of felt making.  Why does wool felt and how does the detergent and water affect the fibres.  To investigate how the process worked the participants of the workshop had a go at making a felt picture which they took home as a reminder of the activity.

Also present on the day working with the Partnership was Science Circuit which is part of the University of Wales Aberystwyth’s Centre of Widening Participation.  Information was available about the courses that are provided by Science Circuit and gave routes of progression into Science education for those who wanted to try more activities.

Links to the electron microscope pictures used in this activity can be found at http://www.aber.ac.uk/bioimage/users/user18/   The “felted” pictures show the structure of wool treated with hot water and detergent and the “marino” file shows untreated wool.
